Health & Safety Policy
1. Purpose
The purpose of this Health and Safety Policy is to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved in GTT’s online counselling courses. This includes students, tutors, and visitor/guests, and addresses potential risks associated with online learning, technology use, and mental health support.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all participants enrolled in GTT’s online counselling courses, tutors delivering courses, and any other individuals involved in the course delivery process.
3. Responsibilities
GTT Management:
Tutors:
• Foster a supportive, respectful, and inclusive virtual learning environment.
• Be alert to signs of distress or mental health concerns among students, providing appropriate support or referrals as necessary.
• Follow GTT protocols for responding to emergencies or urgent student needs.
• Students:
• Take responsibility for maintaining a safe and comfortable personal environment during online courses.
• Follow guidelines for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, including taking breaks and setting up ergonomic study spaces.
• Immediately report any concerns regarding health, safety, or well-being during the course.
4. Online Learning Environment
Technology Use:
• Ensure that online platforms are regularly updated and secure to protect personal data and prevent cyber threats.
• Students and staff should use secure internet connections and up-to-date devices to access course materials.
Ergonomics:
• Students and instructors should ensure their workspaces are ergonomically sound, including using appropriate seating, computer screens, and lighting to prevent physical strain.
• Guidance will be provided for proper setup of desks and chairs for long online sessions.
Mental Health and Wellbeing:
• Students may encounter challenging content or emotionally intense discussions. Tutors will ensure regular mental health breaks during course work.
• Tutors will provide regular tutorial sessions and be available for pastoral support.
5. Confidentiality and Data Protection
• All personal and sensitive information, including students' mental health concerns, will be kept confidential in accordance with data protection regulations.
• Secure platforms will be used for any student interactions that involve sensitive information (such as pastoral sessions or personal feedback).
6. Reporting and Support Procedures
Incident Reporting:
• Any health or safety incidents related to the online learning environment (e.g., technical issues, mental health concerns, bullying, etc.) should be reported to the course tutor.
• GTT will act promptly to resolve issues and provide necessary support to those affected. o GTT encourages a no-blame culture where individuals feel comfortable reporting issues without fear of retribution.
Emergency Procedures:
• In cases where a student’s wellbeing is at serious risk, tutors will follow GTT's emergency procedures to ensure immediate action, including contacting emergency services or referring the student to appropriate mental health professionals.
• Students will be provided with emergency contact information should they need urgent support outside of normal course hours.
7. Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy will be reviewed annually by GTT to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness in providing a safe and healthy online learning environment. Feedback from students, and tutors will be actively sought to improve our health and safety practices.
